Proverbs 27:23–27

[23] Know well the condition of your flocks,

and give attention to your herds,

[24] for riches do not last forever;

and does a crown endure to all generations?

[25] When the grass is gone and the new growth appears

and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,

[26] the lambs will provide your clothing,

and the goats the price of a field.

[27] There will be enough goats’ milk for your food,

for the food of your household

and maintenance for your girls. (ESV)

Leaders as Shepherds

This section of five verses is an extended proverb about giving diligent attention to one's responsibilities, using an allegory of a shepherd tending to his flock to illustrate the actions of a Wise leader with a prosperous period of rule.

v.23 This verse emphasizes the importance of knowing the status of one’s livestock, including their health, well-being, and productivity. By paying close attention to the condition of their flocks and herds, individuals can make informed decisions about how to care for their animals and maximize their productivity.

v.24 This is a reminder to us that wealth and success are not guaranteed and that individuals must work hard to maintain prosperity. Individuals can increase their chances of success and prosperity by taking care of their livestock and ensuring their productivity.

v.25 Speaks specifically about the benefits of caring for one’s animals. It highlights that caring for one’s animals can provide tangible benefits, such as wool for clothing or income from selling goats.

v.26 Emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation, suggesting that by planning and preparing for the needs of their family and servants, individuals can ensure that they have enough resources to go around.

v.27 Concludes with the importance of hard work and perseverance, stating that those who work hard and persevere will ultimately be successful, while those who are lazy or dishonest will ultimately fail.

Proverbs 27:23-27 emphasizes the importance of caring for one’s possessions, particularly one’s livestock, to achieve prosperity and success. Individuals can increase their chances of achieving their goals and living a prosperous life by being diligent in their work, planning and preparing for the future, and persevering in the face of challenges.

Of course, this passage is fulfilled ultimately in Jesus Christ, the everlasting messianic King, which recalls David's vocation as a shepherd. Paradoxically, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world is also the Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep. In this way, Christ serves as the faithful Shepherd who provides for the eternal welfare of his flock and who also reigns as King over all kings. This proverb also applies to Christian pastors and church workers, who are called to shepherd God's flock on behalf of Christ himself, anticipating his return.
